Software
There
are a number of software and data files available from the STANDUP
project. None of these are supported in any way, and are supplied
without guarantees.
The STANDUP System
The STANDUP system can run either of two modes, FULL or SIMPLE:
- SIMPLE:In this mode, the software does not create jokes from
a dictionary, but simulates the generation of jokes by
selecting items from a list of nearly a thousand pre-stored jokes, all
of them generated previously by the STANDUP system. SIMPLE mode is
quicker to download (54MB), easier to install, takes up less disc space
(less than 100MB), responds quickly and requires no other supporting
software (just Java).
- FULL:In this mode, the software makes use of a large
lexical database (dictionary), and
generates jokes as needed. It requires further supporting software (230MB)
which in turn involves a detailed installation process; it also takes up more disk space (4GB)and may respond slowly.
Externally, the
behaviour appears the same in SIMPLE or in FULL mode, but
the SIMPLE mode will respond
more quickly (and will run out of jokes much sooner).
To get FULL mode running, you should first install the SIMPLE mode
(we recommend checking at this stage that it all works on your machine!). Then -- if
you wish -- you can upgrade to FULL mode by downloading and installing the additional
files. Once you have installed FULL mode,
you can still run the STANDUP system in
SIMPLE mode if required.
Technical Requirements
To run the STANDUP system (either FULL or SIMPLE), requires:
- a PC
- Windows XP (Home or Professional), or Windows Vista,
or some modern version of Linux.
Macs and other variants of Windows
have not been
tested, and we do not know if the software will run on these
other systems.

at least 512 MB of memory, although 1 GB is recommended for better
performance
- free disk space of 4 GB (FULL) or 60 MB (SIMPLE)

a processor equivalent at least to a 1.5 GHz Intel/AMD

an up to date Java Runtime Environment -- see the
STANDUP DOWNLOAD FACILITY (below) for fuller details.
(To find out about your computer, open
the My computer icon (if it's not on your Desktop,
look under "Start"). This should show you the Hard Disks, with the Free Space
listed in GB. Click on "View System Information", and then
the "General" tab tells you, in the bottom right
corner, how much memory you have (e.g. 512MB of RAM) and how fast your
processor is (e.g. 2.6 GHz).)
