I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Natural Language Generation group. My area of interest is creative language generation: getting computers to produce jokes, stories, poetry. Within that, my principal interest is in the formalisation of the mechanisms of humour.
Principal investigator for the project STANDUP: Facilitating language play in non-speaking children through computer supported joke construction. This was funded by EPSRC from October 2003 to March 2007, in collaboration with the University of Dundee and the University of Edinburgh. Visit the project's web page if you would like more information, or wish to download our software.
Researcher/co-investigator on the Natural Language Group's platform grant, funded by EPSRC, from March 2007 onwards.
Researcher/co-investigator on The Joking Computer project, which is developing the STANDUP software (above) into a public exhibit, with funding from the EPSRC, from February 2009 to July 2010.
Principal supervisor for the PhD research of Chris Venour, with Chris Mellish as the other supervisor (March 2007 onwards).
