MSc Projects - Level 5 - Communicating Spatio-temporal Data

1. Modern weather forecasting is guided by computer generated numerical weather prediction (NWP) data. Human forecasters using this data are required to edit this computer generated data using their experience/expertise. In the RoadSafe project we work with spatio-temporal weather data for an English county. You will develop a tool that allows human forecasters to edit these data visually. This means you will display the spatio-temporal weather data and allow the forecasters to select portions of the display and change their values in one shot instead of editing each value in the selected area. When such changes are made to an area, the neighbouring areas need to be updated as well. On this project you will work with forecasters from AMI.

2. SVG allows us to draw interactive graphics on web pages. SVG also helps in providing textual descriptions of graphical content to visually impaired users. You will work on building a tool that produces web pages with graphical content that is accompanied by textual descriptions. The textual descriptions may also be useful to sighted users. So your tool integrates the textual descriptions with the graphical objects on a web page. The focus of the project will be on producing such multi-modal documents (which are also interactive).

3. Exploratory data analysis of geo-referenced spatial data is an important activity in many businesses. For example, based on last years PC sales across UK it is possible to make plans for targeting certain areas for annual maintenance contracts for future. You will work on developing a tool that implements several spatial data analysis methods which users can execute on their data sets. Your tool provides facilities for comparing the performances of these different methods on the same data set thus allowing the user to develop improved methods well suited for data sets of her interest.

The above examples are only indicative of the kind of work I am interested in. Final project allocation will be based on discussion with students.
